Paju - Day 1

Skate trips often start with a weird feeling in the gut. I wonder why. I left home today at eight, got to the station by eight fifteen and missed the train I had to take, the train that only runs once an hour, by ten minutes. That's how my trip to Paju began. I raced to the subway station and got on the line number four, then changed to line number three and didn't get a seat for half an hour.

The bike crew made use of the nice weather and dwelled in their freedom, accelerated by 125cc engines and the prospect of fighting the streets of a foreign city. Paju is located north of Seoul, not even far away, perhaps forty minutes by car and just over an hour by subway, I sure know. Ryan picked me up from the station and we met up with the biker boys who where in a better mood.

The day started at an unfinished skate park, dusty and yet awkwardly fun to skate. It was still early and it took a while for everyone to arrive. There was Big Ryan, Dirty Yang, 1JM and Jason the Kid from Kadence; there was Brian, Patrick, Martyn and Nak from UNSG Magazine; there was Luke and Soo-chan from Timber Shop, and then our guest skaters Toby from NZ and Baby Man-ki.

It's a colorful mix of skaters and people who make things happen, like writers, filmers and photographers. The trip is part of our mag and will appear in the upcoming issue, which is already issue number four. Hard to believe that none of us has gone crazy yet. Some of us got close, I guess, but nobody's thrown the towel. It's not always easy, but there's good times that pull people together.
