Home - Day 5

A humming sound dominates the air in the kitchen. Other than that it is quiet. It's always quiet here, I realize. Not only in this room or this house, but in this street and this town. This town is different to London or Seoul, it's a great place to grow up or grow old in. What you do with the many years in between is the question. I reckon most people decide to stay, and there's nothing wrong with that. It's just not what I'm feeling. At least not for now, or anytime in the foreseeable future.

Three, two, one - bing! With an unnaturally happy bell sound the humming seizes and it grows super silent. Only as an echo it remains for a few seconds. I try to catch it, but as soon as I focus on it it's gone. I push in the button that mechanically releases the door to snap open - clonk! Beautiful. Three slices of left-over pizza from last night - two salami pepperoni and one tuna onion. In the meantime I've prepared coffee, too. Instant goodness, completing a perfect breakfast.

In the afternoon I meet Tobs. We go to Mario, a kind of Italian bistro nearby. We find a bright corner and order bruschetta and coke, tiramisu and coffee. For Tobs it's lunch, for me a belated dessert. The television screen shows global news, but I'm not interested enough to pay attention, which, by the way, is something I'm not proud of. Instead we talk about Christmas and other things that happened. It's true though, I should know what's going on in the world. But frankly I find it hard to care when I'm not entirely sure what's up in my own world.
