Bangkok pt.2 - Day 7

Today we took a taxi to Mo Chit again, followed by a ride on the BTS to Siam. I definitely like using public transportation when I'm in a foreign place. Even more so when it's a skytrain that actually provides you with a view. The BTS is basically a city tour without a tour guide. And what you see on the way from Mo Chit to Siam is just amazing. The whole city is lying at your feet, tall buildings and small houses, long billboards and endless highways. Every city has its own character and I think, the BTS is a great way to catch a glimpse of BKK.

We got out at Siam Station, left Siam Center and Paragon aside and entered the Digital Gateway on the other side. We passed many shops of different kinds and took the escalators downstairs. On ground level we took an exit and headed towards Siam Square, a small part of the Siam district which is often concidered the center of Bangkok. It's a super busy area famous for its shopping malls and entertainment facilities. Lots of young people spend their days here and enjoy a truly youthful part of the city.

Tobs and I picked a place called True Café which looked clean and relaxed with wooden floors and comfortable seats, but above all, with free wifi. We went upstairs to the second floor, which was focusing on the coffee side of things, and took a seat at a table in one of the rear corners. The walls were large windows that displayed the storefront of an ugly building on one side, and an enormous main road with endless lines of walking people on the other side. And watching the scene from above felt a bit like watching a silent movie.

The coffee was quite good, but the wifi was letting us down big time, so we only had a snack and waited for Miss Ploy to arrive. I told her the name of the place and that we were close to the BTS station, but I didn't tell her that we walked out the building, then right and straight till the end of the street, then left and straight, another left, and another two hundred meters straight. And what we didn't know was that there's another True Café right underneath the station, on the first floor of the Digital Gateway.

We still managed to meet up and decided to go for an early dinner right away. Tobs and I were craving Italian food, so Miss Ploy took us to a great place inside the Emporium Mall in Sukhumvit's Soi 24, close to Benjasiri Park. We grabbed a taxi first, but traffic was so inert that Miss Ploy on the nearside soon grew antsy and suggested taking the BTS. So we stopped the car and took the skytrain to Phrom Phong Station where we hooked up with her friend Adrian.

Together we had a real nice dinner, Tobs and Adrian had pizza, Miss Ploy had Spaghetti and I had Lasagne. After eating up we went to a lower floor and looked for a water boiler thing for home. We actually found a few electric kettles, but they all cost too much. At the end I decided to buy a little coffee mashine with a built-in filter, which I find super convenient. Plus it was cheaper than all the other items.

Next we walked to a place called Parrots. We had a few drinks and chatted into the night. The place closed at eleven and we were slowly running out of places with free wifi. At one point Miss Ploy actually called McCafé and instead of placing an order she asked for the internet conditions. Fortunately Adrian knew a Coffee World around Nana Station which was not too far away. We took a quick taxi, only to find out that they weren't offering wifi tonight.

We finally ended up at a very mellow place called Bug & Bee, a 24-hour coffee shop bistro thing close to Sala Daeng Station. We sat at a nice round table on the second floor and had coffee and iced tea. We had a great time, till at around one o'clock Ploy and Adrian had to take off. It was late, but Tobs and I decided to stay a bit longer to work on some stuff. I was still super happy with the purchase I had made earlier, but on our way back home we realized that with a coffee mashine we can't even fix instant noodles .
