Two Worries to Go, Please

Today was one of the coldest days this winter and I'm glad I made it here without freezing in mid-walk. The uniformed people behind the counter are busy. One is taking orders, others are slaving away in the back where noone can see. I'm sitting at the end of a long wooden table, one I would like to own myself, sipping coffee, when I hear a woman call me. Philly Cheese Sandwich and Honey Camembert Panini to go!

The coach is filled with people who look glad to have escaped the cold for a while. I was one of the first in line at the station and got a seat. Curtis Mayfield is playing his songs while I try to think of nothing. Of course, I fail. I think about work, there's so much left to do for the next issue. There always is. I think about spots and skaters, possible photos and articles. I wish I didn't have to translate. I wish, I wish, I wish.

Finally the train arrives. The doors open and I step out into the arctic. The streets are icy and snow is piled up on every side. Worried about the food I open my jacket and put the plastic bag to my chest. Strangely comforted I walk past her office building and wait for my lunch time rendez-vous with Sumin. There she is, she gives me a huge smile. Suddenly all my worries are gone and I know that spring will come soon.
