Okay, I've been trying to write something about old school rap for two hours now. The thing is, I don't know too much about it. All I wanted to tell you is that I like it. At least some of it. But then that's where the trouble begins. I don't know squat about it, how can I say that I like it? So I tried to find out more about it. And as it turns out, I don't like it all that much. I just like some of it.
It's frustrating. I don't know how to write this post anymore. There's something I want to say, but I don't know where to begin or how to explain. Then there's the question, why bother trying in the first place, but that's a door I don't want to open. Another thing is something that a friend of mine said about Korean kyopos in LA. She said, most of them think they're black.
So here's what I'm going to say. There's something amazing about hip hop. It's different to most of the other popular music today, and I want to call that difference sophistication. The beats, the rhymes, the stories. That's something I try to pay a lot of attention to. I don't know about bitches and white lines, but I like the fact that many rappers out there know their vocabulary.
For example, in New York, where they say that hip hop was first created, spoken-word poetry had a huge influence on the development of rap. That's why I think that some of the rappers I like are close to being writers. Only instead of books they write lyrics. So, to sum up, I wasn't born in the Bronx, I didn't whitness the disco rap era, but I still like it a lot. At least some of it.
