This collection of short stories was first published in 1973. I bought it almost fourty years later in my favorite used-book store in London. One thing I didn't know about Henry Charles Bukowksi is that he was born Heinrich Karl Bukowski. He was raised in Germany, then moved to Los Angeles at a very young age. When he was twenty-four, his first story was published in a magazine. Two years later another story followed. However, he never quite made it to recognition then, which is why he stopped writing for almost ten years. That's when he changed. Bukowski was a heavy drinker, his writing raw and original. He certainly has some re-occuring themes, such as whisky, women and writing. I liked this book very much, it left a great impression.
