I remember back in the days, when I first lived in Korea for a while, Woo Hoo Chung San used to host skateboard contests every now and then. Chanjuelz always was the emcee and everyone had a great time. Then the shop closed and not too many events were held anymore. Occasionally, words of some sort of gathering reached my ear over the years, but basically they were years of absence.
Today, after a very long time, there was a contest at Cult that I could actually be part of. Not that I was that competitive, far from it, but it was fun to see everyone at one spot. Plenty of old skaters and many new ones, the scene has grown bigger again and unknown faces showed up to join the fest. The sponsoring was dope and the tunes were on point. 1JM stepped up as the host emcee this time and rocked it.
The contest was a line competition. Do a trick on the box, then clear the set via hubba, hand rail or trick down the stairs. The program wasn't short of a high-ollie contest and a game of S.K.A.T.E. A light drizzle almost shut us down, but all in all it was a great day. Finally, 1JM and Bass Hammer rapped up the evening with a beats and rhymes performance till the police showed up. Good times.
After cleaning up and wolfing down a collective dinner, I rushed home, got a shower, got in some fresh clothes, then a taxi. My bro, Seung-wook, was presenting a video premiere in collaboration with Mixture in Itaewon. It was Cityscape by Strush Wheels, a Japanese wheels company. Many of the skaters went to the event after the contest and let the night fade out with a great flick and a cold beer.
