One of my favourite places in London is the basement of Leyas
coffee shop in Camden. It's close to Mornington Crescent station,
just a few houses up from Koko. Especially on a cold or rainy day,
when I can't bother to take a long trip to a fancy place to read or
write or do some work, that's where I go to. It's only a five minute
walk from home and it serves decent coffee.
Except for two small tables on ground level, which are great if you want to look
out on Camden High Street, the main seating area is downstairs.
Today I walked in, got my coffee upstairs where the counter is and
took it to the basement along with a ham and cheese and mixed leaves
and mustard sandwich. There were four people scattered around,
occupying the best tables.
Fortunately they were all by themselves, which means, nobody was
talking. You could actually hear the mellow jazz music that came out
of the cleverly arranged ceiling speakers. Not like the other day,
when I came downstairs and there was a bunch of American English
speaking girls playing some verbal game that required descriptions and
caused shouting and cheering.
No, not today. It's a bit brisk, but I would take the cold anytime if I could
avoid the noisy girls. Today the atmosphere is really good to do
some translating. The music changes and a clean, melodic beat is
making my head nod. If I had been indecisive, which is not the case,
now I would know. I eat up my bread and push away the tray, I crack
the knuckles of my fingers, and get started.
