Sunshine in the Afternoon

The first week of classes is over. I got a taste of all the lectures and seminars and I must say that some of them are rather bitter. But I've met some awesome people already and I look forward to a year of hard studying and drinking coffee by the liter. Over the weekend I will dismiss some of the less interesting courses so that my timetable will make more sense and I can use it as a basis to build my everyday London life around.

When you walk from Leicester Square to Covent Garden and then turn right after you've passed the market, there's a place on Wellington Street called The Charles Dickens Café. It's a corner store and the many single-glazed windows let passers-by see all the pastry displayed in the glass box next to the shiny old coffee machine. Cakes and cookies, but also salads and other culinary treats.

The afternoon sun is already low at an early five o'clock. It's been a sunny day, but brisk compared to the beginning of the week. Sunshine is getting through a fast-moving layer of clouds. It shines over the market buildings and finds its way through the open window on my left to meet me with friendly beams of delightful goodness which almost makes visible the smell of my coffee.
